Please join us for our first ever Vale Wassail at Vale Community Hospital in Dursley on Sunday 19th February from 4.30pm. For this traditional ancient ceremony we will say a toast for growth and an abundant harvest.
The wassail celebrates the humble apple tree. We will give thanks for its produce and scare away evil spirits, banish the winter darkness and look forward to buds, blossom and trees laden with fruit.
We will begin with a procession around the site and a ceremony with the Master and Mistress. We will all then:
- Wassail the tree
- Hang toast in the tree
- Join in with the singing and processing
- Drink mulled cider or apple juice and eat cake (provided for a donation)!
If any musicians are able to come, please bring instruments! We will be playing popular tunes in G. Anyone can bring drums, triangles, and other noisy percussion – even a pan and wooden spoon, the more noise we make the better!
Please also bring a candle and something to light it with.
We are also holding a community day leading up to the wassail, on Sunday 29th January from 12-4pm.
We would love to have your help with activities around the allotments and hospital grounds – please wear warm clothes and sturdy footwear. All welcome for part or all the time!
