Selsley Update from Amanda:

We’ve been given access to a bit more land up at Selsley and over the winter, we’ve been clearing brambles and bay willow herb. Some of our recycled ornamental plants have been put in along the wall to give it some colour. This additional land gives us more much needed space to grow a good range of food.

For the last 3 weeks we’ve been digging trenches for the potatoes and preparing the ground ready for planting – the potatoes are nearly all in and we’ve got onions, garlic, leeks and broad beans in too. The parsnips and beetroot we’ve sown are from seeds we saved ourselves. The seed saving element of our work is going to be part of our planning this year and hopefully, in the next year or so, we should be self-sufficient in seeds. Our compost has done well this year too and we were lucky enough to get a second hand large mechanical riddler to sieve it which is great fun and should make this activity more attractive to our wonderful volunteers!

We’re still looking for volunteers to help us build a shed out of recycled wood, if anyone can help . . . . .!

Annual Spring Gardening Event

At our Spring Gardening Event on April 12th, we’re launching a range of vegetable plants that have been grown from saved seed in our own compost. We’ve got many varieties of tomatoes and peppers available on the day as well as three types of broad beans, fruit trees and bushes and some ornamentals. At the end of May, we’ll have many other plants available including ‘Cherokee Vale of Tears’ climbing french beans, Thrupp runner beans, courgettes, squash – either from seeds we’ve saved ourselves or from organic seed stock. All these will be available for a donation.
If you’d like to know more about this new and exciting project or receive a plant list, please get in touch.
